About Us

The Central Library of Vidyasagar University began its existence in the year 1986 with the commencement of six Post Graduate departments. Since then it has grown in size and content along with the university to take the present shape. All these years the Central Library has been the life line for the academic activity of the institute. It is one of the central facilities used by all the types of members and ex members of this University. The main library is housed in the building of its own having four floors on a plinth area near about 11,000 Sq. ft. Since the year 2018 a new 3 storied annex library building with a total carpet area of about 34920 sq. ft. has been joining with the main library for expansion of its area as well as services.

The library has a collection of more than 138065 volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books & Bound volumes of Journals, Standards etc. Collection development, its organization and information retrieval are the basic functions of the library. The book collection has been supporting the teaching, research, development and other professional activities of the academic departments.

With the developments of Information and Communication Technologies, the behavioural characteristics of the library users have been changing rapidly and the library is always trying its best to adapt with the technological advancement. In the year 2001 the Central Library had started developing computer based information storage and retrieval system in the multi-user environment using SOUL software package. The identity of all books and the library users were fully bar-coded and all Library house-keeping operations like, acquisition, cataloguing, circulation and periodicals services had been automated with the help of that package. Later, since the year 2017 the central library has been switched over its LMS to KOHA, a user- friendly open source software.

Since the year 2018, RFID technology was adapted in the central library. Now it is a fully automated RFID enabled modern library system with modern facilities which makes the library to become an outstanding learning resource centre catering to the ever growing and uncompromising information and intellectual requirements of the students, faculty, researchers and other university community members. Workstations and Self-Check Kiosks are being used for book borrowing process. RFID antenna gates are used to protect the unauthorized books taken out from the library.

A well-equipped Digital Resource Centre is in operation for providing digital resource services, from where users can access different e-resources and Institutional Repositories.

To ensure proper surveillance, Electronic Surveillance System has been adopted in some important service areas in the main library as well as in the annex library building. The Library has already installed 802.11n based Wi-Fi service for all Student, Staff, Faculty and Other University Members. This service is available 24 X 7 in the entire library area free of cost. The library also has a well-equipped Xerox centre and the users can avail this facility on payment of a nominal charge. Print Service is also available from the CDRS unit against nominal charges.

The Central Library at present has been catering to needs of about 4263 Post- Graduate students and Research Scholars, nearly 161 faculty members of 28 departments, about 131 non-teaching and administrative staff of this institute. Besides, its services are extended to a number of other organizations also through institutional membership services.

The central library of Vidyasagar University, being a member of e-ShodhSindhu, provides online access to about 8.3 thousand peer-reviewed full text journals and database services. It has also a good collection of Electronic books in its Digital Archive Centre.

To cope with the ever increasing demand of the users the university library has the membership of British Council Library, Kolkata and Developing Library Network (DELNET) New Delhi.
